Martins denied in derby stalemate

Newcastle striker Obafemi Martins came closest to claiming the derby headlines as the crossbar denied him a winner following the goalless draw at Middlesbrough.

The Nigeria international hit the woodwork with a 35th-minute shot in a game that burst into life after the break.

Shay Given had to pull off a fine save to deny full-back Justin Hoyte 15 minutes from time and Boro's record signing Afonso Alves squandered a host of chances.
